The Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) worked with local governments, businesses, non-profit organizations, and the general public to prepare the Comprehensive Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan for the Greater Nashville Region, which helped establish bicycle and pedestrian transportation priorities for Davidson, Rutherford, Sumner, Wilson and Williamson counties, plus the cities of Spring Hill and Springfield.
VPR’s portion of the Plan was community involvement. This included promotion of community meetings by developing awareness of the meetings, creating and distributing email blasts, maintaining stakeholder and community databases, and following up with media and community after the meetings.
Attendance at all of the community meetings exceeded the number of attendees anticipated. Participants commented as to the ‘tremendous amount of publicity’ generated. As a result of the community participation, there was very diverse and rich discussion on all related topics at the public meetings. Varallo Public Relations was presented the 2010 Transportation Planning Council Best Project Award by the Institute of Transportation Engineers for this project.
